Historic Past - Modern Luxury

Description:
"In front, the sun climbs slowly, how slowly
But westward, look…the land is bright."
-Arthur Hugh Clough, 19th century English poet

Welcome to Westward Look Resort, where traditional southwestern charm and modern luxury unite. Our 80-acre Tucson hotel, resort, and spa is nestled at the foot of the Santa Catalina Mountains and is situated around a historic 1900s homestead. At our tranquil guest lodging, you'll enjoy distinctive boutique-style accommodations; award-winning contemporary cuisine; decadent, all-natural spa services; and over 20,000 square feet of well-appointed meeting and event space.

A Special Arizona Resort with a Storied Past

Westward Look Resort grew from an elegant hacienda-style family home built less than six months after Arizona became a state in 1912.  William Watson and his wife Maria bought 172 acres of homestead land that was considered desolate and isolated, located at the end of a long ride on a bumpy dirt road. They sought the services of well-known Tucson architect Merritt Starkweather to build a traditional adobe home, so popular in the American Southwest in the early 1900s.

Today, the Watson’s inviting living room is the cozy heart of the resort. This space features exposed log beams, which were brought from nearby Mount Lemmon.  Our architects have preserved the original stone hearth, fireplace, wrought-iron chandeliers and hardwood floor. The native ocotillo branches that intricately cover the ceiling provide natural insulation and have been there since the house was built.

In the 1920s, tourism began to be an important part of the Tucson economy. The owners added 15 cottages around the original home and welcomed guests to enjoy the ranch experience. Westward Look was named in the 1940s when the estate had grown into a thriving dude ranch operated by Bob and Beverly Nason. The Nasons partnered with American Airlines, inviting the pilots and stewardesses to stay at the ranch and renting rooms to the families of pilots who came to Tucson for flight training. In the 1950s, Walt Disney filmed his award-winning documentary “The Living Desert” in this area and housed some desert animals in the stables at Westward Look.

In the late 1960s, the Nason family sold the property and it was expanded into Tucson’s first resort, offering fine dining, deluxe accommodations and banquet facilities overlooking the city, which had grown to more than 260,000 residents. Today, Westward Look Resort encourages guests to discover the unique qualities of this lush Sonoran Desert setting. Recently, the property underwent a $14 million dollar renovation, updating the look and feel of virtually every resort area.

Sonoran Spa: The Ultimate Desert Retreat

Relax and unwind at the Sonoran Spa, the ultimate Arizona desert oasis. Considered one of the best Tucson spas; this soothing environment encourages both men and women to unwind, restore balance and invigorate body, mind and spirit.

Westward Look Resort's spa features therapeutic herbs, warm stones and cleansing muds of the Sonoran Desert. Sage, jojoba, rosemary, aloe and other native plants of the region grow in the Wellness Garden just outside the spa.

Stones from the Sonoran desert form the path of a beautiful Outdoor Labyrinth that was inspired by the Tohono O’odham symbol, “The Man in the Maze.” Labyrinths are known historically as sacred gateways, which enhance, balance, and regenerate. Associated with ancient pilgrimage routes and rituals of self-discovery, the labyrinth offers a moving meditation experience.

At Sonoran Spa, we pride ourselves on being the ideal site for the rejuvenation of both male and female clients. Guests can enjoy a quick treatment such as a Facial Enzyme Peel or a Refresher Manicure from the Spa's "Tapas Menu." For a more comprehensive experience, book a Desert Stone Massage or a Volcanic Earth Scrub. Sonoran Spa also offers yoga and fitness classes; please contact the spa for a current schedule.

Recreation and Nature Activities at Our Arizona Resort

At Westward Look Resort, our guests are presented with hundreds of ways to explore and discover the desert. The concierge desk can help you determine what outdoor adventure is best for you, and will make the necessary scheduling arrangements (and perhaps schedule a massage treatment as well, if your activity will be particularly strenuous!).

Start out with a casual match on one of our 8 tennis courts. Westward Look Resort has partnered with Vic Braden Tennis College to deliver the ultimate in tennis education, should you desire to improve your serve while on vacation. For a more up close and personal experience with the desert, go hiking or biking through one of the two on-site trails. Additional desert trails are just a short drive from the resort.

Horseback rides are an ideal way to partake of Westward Look's gorgeous surroundings. Our Happy Trails package provides a true taste of the southwest, complete with insights from expert wranglers.
